The edelweiss flower

The edelweiss flower (Leontopodium nivale subsp. Alpinum (Cass.) Greuter), "ice star" of the Asteraceae family is a wild flower that grows in high-altitude limestone areas, particularly in the Swiss Alps. Due to the rarity of its ephemeral white flowers, edelweiss represents the beauty and purity associated with the Alps and the Carpathians. The edelweiss is a national symbol for Switzerland, which hosts a large population of edelweiss in its mountains.

Protected, it is now grown in Switzerland to preserve the wild flower populations of high mountains.

Traditionally, the flower was used in traditional medicine for various ailments. Edelweiss is renowned for its antioxidant properties, which have allowed it to grow at high altitude in a glacial environment, and for its softening, anti-inflammatory properties.

Several scientific studies have analyzed the compounds of edelweiss extracts. For example, the capillary chromatography method revealed 12 compounds of pharmacological importance, including flavonoids, caffeic acids and leontopodic acid from aerial parts of edelweiss.

In cosmetics, the studies cited by NHI (cf. link below) reported anti-wrinkle, moisturizing, anti-inflammatory and collagen booster activities.
